What is a Legacy Server?
Legacy servers are servers that are considered EOL (end-of-life) by their manufacturer. These servers are generally more than a few years old, but are still able to be used efficiently. Some of the servers we offer are both end of life and end of support, meaning that the manufacturer will no longer be supporting this product.
A legacy server is not always a bad choice! If you are building up your first homelab server or are attempting to create your network on a budget, there are a few great options here for you to peruse. However, we are not able to offer the same warranty as a more recent server. If you are needing a longer warranty, we have a few recommendations.
What Servers are EOL?
While it may be confusing at first, there's a simple way to tell which servers are EOL. There are a few different websites that break them down into lists, but we want to give you both the answer and a solution to your problem.
Dell EOL Servers:
R420 - Replaced by R430
R520 - Replaced by R530
R620 - Replaced by R630
R720 - Replaced by R730
R820 - Replaced by R830
R920 - Replaced by R930
HP EOL Servers:
The dates these servers went EOL are varied, but many are at least nine years old. We highly recommend scaling up, but we are more than happy to provide you with these servers at their low price.
Why Should I Scale Up?
Even though the price on these servers is extremely satisfying, there are a few drawbacks. For example, 12th generation Dell Servers utilize DDR3 RAM which is over ten years old. Since there are laptops coming out with DDR5 RAM, it's a simple argument to scale up. You may be spending a little bit more, but you will be getting a server that will work for the next five years at least.
There are plenty of ways to maintain a budget while purchasing better quality servers. At Wholesale Servers, we offer tiered pricing in order to reward our customers for spending money. You receive a greater discount the more that you are able to spend.
