Compatibility
This is the 16th gen front-mount H965i: it installs in the dedicated front controller position and takes its host link and power through chassis cables, so it never consumes a PCIe slot. Dell builds a separate H965i Front for 17th gen servers with its own firmware package, so match the variant. NVMe cannot share an array with SAS or SATA, and SMR drives are not supported. When to Choose This
The H965i is the 16th gen choice for parity RAID with cache: RAID 5 and 6 over 22.5 Gb/s SAS SSDs, VM hosts, and databases on local NVMe. The H755 is the step down at 12 Gb/s; the H355 covers boot mirrors with RAID 0, 1 and 10 only. For vSAN or Ceph, take the HBA355i.
Installation Notes
The H965i has no legacy BIOS boot support: set the server to UEFI before installing an OS on its virtual disk. After a swap, import the foreign configuration through HII or iDRAC.
