Compatibility

It needs a 3.5-inch LFF bay; servers configured only with 2.5-inch bays have no place for it. As a SAS drive it needs a hardware PERC, Smart Array or HBA and a SAS backplane. The carrier must match: Dell 13th gen LFF trays do not fit 14th to 16th gen bays, and HPE carriers are not interchangeable with Dell, so we match the tray to your server. When to Choose This

The 14TB fits dense storage builds: an R740xd2 or R740xd full of these makes a large backup or object store at a modest cost per terabyte. It is a sequential and archive drive, not a database drive; put hot data on SAS or NVMe flash. We will not quote RAID 5 on spindles this size, because the rebuild window is long enough for a second failure to take the array; we quote RAID 6, or RAID 10 when write speed matters.

Installation Notes

To boot from a volume above 2 TB, use UEFI and a GPT partition table. On PERC, clear any foreign configuration before adding the drive to a new virtual disk.
