Compatibility

Bay first: this drive needs a 3.5-inch LFF bay; a 2.5-inch-only chassis cannot take it. Interface second: it is SAS, so it runs behind a PERC, Smart Array or HBA on a SAS backplane, not from onboard SATA. When to Choose This

The 6TB sits below the size where we rule out RAID 5, which makes it a good choice for mid-size file servers and backup targets on 12-bay storage servers. We still quote RAID 6 when the set is wide. Against the 4TB it adds half again the space per bay; the 8TB is the next step for more capacity. Keep hot data on SAS or NVMe flash.

Installation Notes

To boot from a volume above 2 TB, use UEFI and a GPT partition table. On PERC, clear any foreign configuration before adding the drive to a new virtual disk.
