Compatibility

It needs a 3.5-inch LFF bay; servers built only with 2.5-inch bays cannot take it. As a SATA drive it runs on a PERC, Smart Array or HBA as well as onboard SATA, because SAS controllers and backplanes accept SATA drives. When to Choose This

The 8TB SATA suits small-office towers like the T340 and budget backup targets where the controller may be onboard SATA or software RAID. The 8TB SAS needs a SAS controller and adds the SAS link; choose it if the server already runs a PERC or Smart Array with SAS drives. RAID 5 is not something we quote at 8TB, because the long rebuild invites a second failure; we quote RAID 6 or RAID 10, or RAID 1 on two drives.

Installation Notes

To boot from a volume above 2 TB, use UEFI and a GPT partition table. On PERC, clear any foreign configuration before adding the drive to a new virtual disk.
