Refurbished HPE Smart HBA H240ar 12Gbps, a pass-through host bus adapter for the ar modular slot in HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers. The H240ar is HPE's Smart HBA for the Gen9 modular controller slot: 8 lanes of 12 Gb/s SAS and no cache. It is a pass-through HBA for software-defined storage, not a cached RAID controller.

Compatibility
The H240ar mounts on the system board's modular connector and does not use a PCIe slot; it will not fit a standard PCIe slot. That connector takes one controller, so the H240ar replaces a P440ar or P840ar rather than joining one. It has no cache and needs no Smart Storage Battery. Drive cables usually stay with the chassis. When to Choose This
Choose the H240ar for vSAN, Storage Spaces Direct, Ceph or ZFS, where the software owns redundancy and wants raw drives with no controller cache in the path. Its simple RAID 0, 1 and 5 mode runs without cache, fine for a boot mirror but not for production parity arrays. For hardware RAID 5 or 6 with write-back cache, the P440ar with 2 GB FBWC is the right card.

Set HBA mode in HPE Smart Storage Administrator so every drive reaches the OS directly, and bring firmware to a current Gen9 Service Pack for ProLiant baseline before building the pool.
