The E208i is the Essential RAID tier of HPE's Smart Array SR Gen10 family: 8 lanes of 12 Gb/s SAS, no cache, and mixed mode for RAID and pass-through drives. It suits boot mirrors and small arrays.

Compatibility
The -a suffix means the type-a modular connector on the system board: the card does not occupy a PCIe slot and will not fit one; the E208i-p is the PCIe version. HPE builds type-a cards in standard and LH (low-height heatsink) versions, and some chassis call for the LH card, so match the heatsink to the server. Drive cables usually stay with the chassis. When to Choose This
Choose the E208i-a for mirrored boot drives, small RAID 1 or 10 sets, or a mixed-mode build where most drives pass through to vSAN or ZFS. With no cache, RAID 5 parity writes slow down under load; we do not quote it for busy RAID 5. For cached RAID 5 or 6 in the same slot, the P408i-a with 2 GB FBWC is the step up.
