Refurbished HPE Smart Array P440 4GB FBWC, a cached RAID controller on a low profile PCIe card for HPE Gen9 servers. The P440 family is HPE's 8-lane, 12 Gb/s SAS Smart Array for Gen9 ProLiant servers, with flash-backed write cache. It is the mainstream Gen9 RAID controller for 8-bay cages.

Compatibility
The P440 is the stand-up PCIe version, so it fits value-class Gen9 servers with no modular controller slot, and any Gen9 chassis where that slot is taken. It needs a slot that is physically x8 or wider. The 4 GB FBWC needs the HPE Smart Storage Battery, which HPE requires for Gen9 P-series controllers and sells separately. When to Choose This
Choose the P440 for an 8-drive RAID 5, 6 or 10 array in a Gen9 server that lacks the modular slot, or as a second controller. Its 4 GB cache is double the P440ar's 2 GB, which helps write-heavy parity arrays. Where the modular slot is free, the P440ar keeps the PCIe slot open; for 16 drives on one controller, the P840 carries twice the lanes.
Installation Notes
Gen9 HBA mode presents every drive to the OS and disables the RAID engine. Set it in HPE Smart Storage Administrator before deploying vSAN or ZFS, not after arrays exist.
