Refurbished HPE Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen10 4GB, a 16-lane cached RAID controller for the type-a modular slot in HPE Gen10 and Gen10 Plus servers. The P816i-a tops HPE's Smart Array SR Gen10 family with 16 lanes of 12 Gb/s SAS and 4 GB of flash-backed write cache. It is the Gen10 controller for dense cages and write-heavy arrays.

Compatibility
The type-a card mounts on the modular connector and leaves the PCIe slots free; it does not fit a PCIe slot. HPE specifies the LH (low-height heatsink) P816i-a in place of the standard card in a DL360 Gen10 fitted with GPUs. The 4 GB cache requires an HPE Smart Storage Battery or Hybrid Capacitor, sold separately. Four x4 ports need matching backplane cables, which usually stay with the chassis. When to Choose This
Choose the P816i-a when one controller has to drive more than eight bays, or when write-heavy RAID 6 and 60 arrays need the larger 4 GB cache; SmartCache lets SSDs cache a spinning array. For an 8-bay cage, the P408i-a does the job for less; for pass-through drives only, the cacheless E208i-a skips the battery.
