The P840 family is HPE's 16-lane Smart Array for Gen9 ProLiant servers, running 12 Gb/s SAS through two x8 internal ports with flash-backed write cache. It drives a 16-drive cage from one controller.

Compatibility
The ar card mounts on the system board's modular connector and leaves the PCIe slots free; it will not fit a PCIe slot, which is what the P840 is for. Its two x8 internal ports need the server-specific P840ar cable kit for the drive cage; cables usually stay with the chassis, so confirm the kit matches your backplane. Pick the P840ar for a fully populated DL380 Gen9 SFF cage on one controller without spending a PCIe slot; it drives 16 drives directly over its 16 lanes. The tradeoff is cache: 2 GB against 4 GB on the PCIe P840, so heavy parity write loads favor the P840. For an 8-drive cage, the P440ar is enough and costs less.
