Refurbished HPE Smart Array P840 4GB FBWC, a 16-lane cached RAID controller on a full-height PCIe card for HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers. The P840 family is HPE's 16-lane Smart Array for Gen9 ProLiant servers, running 12 Gb/s SAS through two x8 internal ports with flash-backed write cache. It drives a 16-drive cage from one controller.

Compatibility
The P840 is a full-height, half-length board, so it needs a full-height slot that is physically x8 or wider; low-profile-only risers cannot take it. The 4 GB cache needs the HPE Smart Storage Battery, which HPE requires for Gen9 P-series controllers and sells separately. The two x8 internal ports reach the backplane through server-specific cable kits, which usually stay with the chassis. When to Choose This
Choose the P840 when a Gen9 cage holds more than eight drives, you want one controller without an expander, and the modular slot is unavailable or holds a boot controller. The 4 GB cache suits RAID 6 and 60 on large spinning arrays. If the modular slot is free, the P840ar saves the PCIe slot; for eight drives, the low profile P440 is enough and fits more slot positions.
