The Xeon E5-4600 v4 series is Intel's Broadwell-EP four-socket line for LGA 2011-3, with four DDR4 memory channels and 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes per CPU. On Dell 13th gen and HPE Gen9 hardware it earns its place as a low-cost way to put a large in-memory footprint behind four sockets.

Compatibility
This is an E5-4600 v4 part for LGA 2011-3 four-socket boards. It never interchanges with E7-8800 or E7-4800 servers, which use LGA 2011-1, and does not fit two-socket E5-2600 boards. This SKU caps memory at DDR4-2133, so faster DIMMs clock down to that speed. The Dell PowerEdge R830 gives each CPU four memory channels across its 48 DIMM slots. When to Choose This
The E5-4640 v4 is the entry point for a four-socket memory build: 48 cores across four sockets at 105 W each, for in-memory caches, analytics and VM hosts where RAM capacity matters more than clock speed. The E5-4650 v4 adds two cores per socket and DDR4-2400 support at the same 105 W, and is the better buy if memory bandwidth matters. Older generation: per-core licensed software gets more work per license on newer platforms.
