This is a 4th Gen Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids) part for LGA 4677 boards only; it does not fit the LGA 4189 or LGA 3647 sockets of earlier generations. Intel rates it for one-socket use only, so it cannot run as a pair; fit it in CPU1 of a single-processor build. At 185 W it runs on the standard heatsink in the 1U Dell PowerEdge R660; the 2U Dell PowerEdge R760xs needs its high-performance heatsink from 185 W up. When to Choose This
The U suffix means a one-socket part priced below the two-socket bins, and the 5412U is the sensible single-socket virtualization or file-server chip: 24 cores, 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes and eight memory channels without paying for a second socket. If you need more cores on one socket, the Gold 6414U goes to 32 cores at DDR5-4800. The trap: it never pairs, so do not buy it for a box you plan to fill with two CPUs.
