The Xeon Gold 5500 series is the mainstream Gold tier of Intel's 5th Gen Xeon Scalable (Emerald Rapids, 2024) family for LGA 4677, running eight DDR5-4800 memory channels and 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes per CPU. It brings 28 cores to the Gold 5 tier with faster memory than the 5400 series.

Compatibility
This is a 5th Gen Xeon Scalable (Emerald Rapids) part for LGA 4677 boards only; it does not fit LGA 4189 or LGA 3647 sockets, and the system BIOS should be current before the swap. Intel rates it for one-socket use only, so it cannot run as a pair; fit it in CPU1 of a single-processor build. At 185 W it runs on the standard heatsink in the 1U Dell PowerEdge R660 and needs the high-performance heatsink in the Dell PowerEdge R660xs and R760xs, which cap 5th Gen parts at 28 cores. When to Choose This
The 5512U puts 28 cores on one socket at 185 W, for virtualization, VDI and file servers that never need a second CPU. Against the 4th Gen Gold 5412U it adds four cores and faster DDR5-4800 memory. The trap is the same for every U part: it never pairs, so a two-socket box needs the Gold 5520+ instead.
