Compatibility
This is a 4th Gen Xeon Scalable (Sapphire Rapids) part for LGA 4677 boards only; it does not fit the LGA 4189 or LGA 3647 sockets of earlier generations. At 205 W it needs the L-type heatsink and Dell's high-performance Gold fans in the 1U Dell PowerEdge R660; check Dell's thermal table against your drive layout. Memory runs at DDR5-4800 with this CPU, whatever the DIMM rating. In a two-socket build, run a matched pair: the same SKU in both sockets. Browse matching parts for the Dell PowerEdge R660.
When to Choose This
The 6438N is the two-socket networking bin at 32 cores with full DDR5-4800 memory, for NFV, 5G core and packet-processing nodes that also need bandwidth. The Gold 6428N is the lower-power networking choice at 185 W with DDR5-4000. For general virtualization, the Gold 6438Y+ is the better buy at the same TDP, with a 4.0 GHz turbo against 3.6 GHz here.
