Compatibility
This is an Ice Lake-SP part for LGA 4189 boards only; it does not fit the older LGA 3647 sockets. At 8 cores and 105 W it fits every tagged board, including the value Dell PowerEdge R450 and R550 and the cost-optimized R650xs and R750xs, and it runs on the standard heatsink in the R650. Memory runs at DDR4-2666 with any Silver 4300 processor; faster DIMMs buy nothing. Dell lists the 4309Y as not supporting Optane persistent memory in the R650. When to Choose This
The 4309Y is the cheapest way into an Ice Lake platform: 8 cores at 2.8 GHz base with Speed Select profiles at 105 W. It suits domain controllers, small file servers, backup proxies and per-core licensed software on a budget. The trap is memory bandwidth and core count; for VM hosts the Silver 4314 doubles the cores at 135 W, and the Gold 5315Y gives 8 faster cores with DDR4-2933.
