New Samsung PM1643a 3.84TB 12 Gb/s SAS SSD, a high-capacity read-intensive drive for the 2.5-inch SAS bays in Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant. SAS SSDs are the enterprise flash tier for SAS backplanes: they use the same PERC, Smart Array and HBA controllers and the same bays as SAS hard drives, with the full-duplex SAS link and its error handling. They are the straightforward flash upgrade for an existing SAS array.

Compatibility

This is a 12 Gb/s SAS drive: it needs a SAS controller and SAS backplane, and a SATA-only controller cannot run it. It links at 12 Gb/s on PERC, Smart Array and HBA controllers alike, including a 24G-capable PERC 12. In a 3.5-inch bay it needs a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter carrier. When to Choose This

Choose the 3.84TB PM1643a for the biggest read-intensive SAS volumes: VM datastores, analytics and archives that are read far more than written. On 12 Gb/s PERC and Smart Array controllers it gives up little to the 24G Kioxia PM7-R 3.84TB, which only pulls ahead on a PERC 12 H965i. Against the SATA Intel S4520 3.84TB it has the faster SAS link; for heavy writes take the mixed-use PM7-V.
