New Kioxia 3.84TB 24G SAS SSD, a read-intensive PM7-R for the 2.5-inch SAS bays of Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant servers. SAS SSDs are the enterprise flash tier for SAS backplanes: they use the same PERC, Smart Array and HBA controllers and the same bays as SAS hard drives, with the full-duplex SAS link and its error handling. They are the straightforward flash upgrade for an existing SAS array.

This is a SAS drive: it needs a SAS controller and SAS backplane, and a SATA-only controller cannot run it. The 24 Gb/s trap: on 12 Gb/s PERC, Smart Array and HBA controllers it negotiates down and runs at 12 Gb/s; 24 Gb/s needs a 24G-capable controller and backplane, the PERC 12 H965i class. In a 3.5-inch bay it needs a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter carrier. Dell 13th gen trays differ from 14th to 16th gen trays, and HPE uses its own carriers; we match the tray to your chassis. When to Choose This

Choose the PM7-R for read-heavy work: VM images, analytics and web tiers, where writes stay near 1 DWPD. For write-heavy databases or logging, the PM7-V 3.2TB is the mixed-use counterpart at 3 DWPD with more than twice the random write rate. Against the 12 Gb/s PM1643a 3.84TB it doubles rated sequential reads (4,200 vs 2,100 MB/s), a gain that shows only on a 24G controller. This is the SIE (crypto erase) model, not an SED.
