New Solidigm 3.84 TB D7-P5520 U.2 NVMe SSD, a read-intensive PCIe 4.0 drive on 144-layer TLC for NVMe-wired bays in Dell 14th, 15th and 16th gen servers. U.2 NVMe SSDs connect over four PCIe lanes instead of through a SAS or SATA controller, so they need an NVMe-wired bay and backplane; a SAS or SATA bay cannot run them. They are the low-latency, high-IOPS tier for databases, virtualization and caching, and a PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 drive runs at the PCIe generation the host bay provides.

It needs an NVMe-wired U.2 bay and backplane; a SAS or SATA bay, or a PERC SAS port, cannot run it. The tagged 14th gen hosts run U.2 at PCIe 3.0 and the 15th and 16th gen hosts at PCIe 4.0, so this PCIe 4.0 drive reaches its rated speed only in the newer servers and links at PCIe 3.0 in the older ones. When to Choose This
The 3.84 TB D7-P5520 is the workhorse read-intensive size for VM datastores, web tiers and search indexes. In the 15th and 16th gen hosts it runs at its full PCIe 4.0 rating, so a Gen5 drive like the Kioxia CD8P-R 3.84 TB gains nothing there today. For databases that rewrite heavily, the mixed-use counterpart is the D7-P5620 at 3 DWPD. Fair warning: in the 14th gen hosts the PCIe 3.0 link caps sequential reads well below the rating.
